Job profile of the post of CMA in Indian Railways advertised by RRB

By on November 2, 2014

RRB has advertised 183 posts of Chemical Metallurgist Assistant in the pay scale of Rs. 9300-34800 with grade pay of Rs. 4200/- with minimum educational qualification of degree in Metallurgy or Chemical Engineering or M.Sc in Chemistry or Applied Chemistry. Chemical and Metallurgist is very small organisation in Indian Railways. The cadre is mostly concentrated on Research Design and Standards Organization in Lucknow. The responsibility of the cadre is for preparing the specification and testing of materials used for different applications. The major laboratory is located at RDSO. In Railways, the laboratories are located in every workshop and locomotive maintenance sheds. The most important responsibility of these laboratories is to carry out conditional monitoring of axle for cracks through ultra-sonic flaw detector, grease for ferrous content, dissolved gas analysis of transformer oil for incipient fault in its winding, checks on diesel fuel, lubricating oil, rubber materials, Ferrous and non-ferrous material, brake blocks etc. It also undertakes quality check on the material specification as per the need.

The organization is very small headed by a Junior Administrate or Senior Scale officer in a Railway under the overall control of Mechanical Department.

The promotion to the next grade is not a problem, but the major issue is promotion to officer grade because of the very limited number of posts. Unless the cadre restructuring is undertaken in the near future, there is every possibility of superannuation  in the grade pay of Rs. 4600/- with little hope of promoted to the level of ACMT i.e. Junior scale level officer. However, the situation in RDSO is different, where a degree in Chemical and Metallurgical engineering makes you eligible for the post of (Chemical and Metallurgical Superintendent) CMS in the grade pay of Rs. 4600/- but not so in Railways. The number of Assistant and Senior Scale officer posts is also very large in number, therefore, providing an adequate promotional avenue. There is a possibility that this discrepancy will be observed and corrective action initiated to avoid discontentment in the cadre. Except this aspect in the cadre, there is nothing wrong, and one should  prepare with full throttle as there are limited scope for job opportunities for Chemical and Metallurgical Engineers to find opportunity in Indian Railways.

The working hours are not very strenuous and not requiring working beyond schedule hours. You can conveniently make use of the free time to acquire higher qualification or knowledge bank. The knowledge of Railway working, specification, testing procedures is a privileged experience any may give you openings in Private or PSU sector.

The posting is at the places of the location of Railway workshops and Locomotive maintenance sheds. The place of posting may be a small or near a major city. The posting is stable with almost negligible transfers and that too when promoted to the officers grade.

    Hi All

I have been selected for document verification by RRB Chennai for the post of CMA (chemical and metallurgy assistant).

While applying I had opted for SR and ICF. What does SR (Southern Railway) mean relating to place of posting? Will it be Chennai or Tichy, Salem are also considered as possible place of positing?

Can someone also shed some light to the following questions also. Please

    1) How is the promotion offer

    2) transfers

    3) scope for knowledge

    4) any foreign trips available

    5) is it research oriented or only testing

    6) How much will I get as a take home salary at the initial stages.

    7) Will there be frequent increments in salary

    8) Health risks associated with the job

    9) Timings

    10) Other perks available.

    11) Work Environment

    Eagerly awaiting your reply.

    Thanks
    Sridhar

CMA is a junior level supervisory post. I have written about the future options on my blog https://globalrailelectrica.com/job-opportunities-in-rail-transport/job-profile-of-the-post-of-cma-in-indian-railways-advertised-by-rrb/. However, your quarries are answered as follows:
SR means posting in workshop or electric or diesel maintenance loco shed. The actual place of posting will be decided depending upon the vacancy in different units on the day of joining.
      1. Not very excellent 2. Negligible 3. quite good 4. Negligible and very unlikely 5. Testing only 6. Your advertised basic plus DA and grade pay 7. yearly increment and no out of turn increments. 8. Negligible 9. Schedule working hours as that of the unit in which you are working 10. Nil except advantage of free 3 sets of privilege passes for travel in any part of the country 11. Reasonably OK
You may join and still keep on try for better opportunities in other private and PSUs.

  4. ajay narayan says:

I am applied for CMA Allahabad, can u please tell me what should be cuttoff for it approx for General cat.?

    • Mahesh Kumar Jain says:

How does it matters to you Ajay? Your preparation will remains the same. Plan for minimum 70% marks to be sure for a call.

      • Ajay says:

But, last year chennai board cuttoff for general is 42 marks.

        • Mahesh Kumar Jain says:

It may go to 40% depending on the number of candidates appearing in the examination. It is lowest supervisor category post in IR cadre system and there is a possibility of few applicants. The person holding engineering degree is appearing is eligible for Senior Section Engineer where as it is Junior Engineer for Mett and Chem. engineering and there is possible of less applicant. Here also, there are 16 posts and with not many candidates the chances are good for anyone to get selected with low cut off.

        • srinivas says:

for banglore ur 47% obc 46%

          • Mahesh Kumar Jain says:

i have been selected as cma in west central railway. i want to know about promotion aspects, training period, bond{if any}.
also please clear the doubts if this post is now under 4600 grade pay, after few changes in 7th pay commission.

  11. MMSubhani says:

Dear Sir, I am selected for CMA post in SWR. But, confused about joining as the 5 year indemnity bond is too confusing. It says I should pay training fee and other pay to break the bond. Also, I had applied through RTI about this post. They had replied that CMA vacancies are not available and successful candidates will be appointed to CMS posts with higher grade. But, I find in the offer letter that they have given CMA post only.

    • Mahesh Kumar Jain says:

In RTI u have asked about Bond whereas your quarry is about the offer is of CMA and than vacancy of CMS. CMS is higher grade post and they cannot offer this post to the candidates selected for CMA. After the offer is given, they cannot say now that the vacancy is now available. I am unable to understand the relation between the two things unless all the documents are seen. You may approach the CPO of the concerned Railway.

And tell me what is difference between CMA & CMS ?

    • Mahesh Kumar Jain says:

There are no ready books for a specific examination. What I suggest you to read the syllabus carefully and prepare yourself all the subject. Since you have sufficient time of at least one year for preparation, revise all that has been studies during academics and I am sure that will benefit you more than any other system.
