Job Opportunity in Indian Railways – Technicians Staff

Railway Recruitment Board advertises the requirement of Artisan for different technical departments of Indian Railways. Artisan staff is Group C category staff.  There are four technical departments where artisan staff is absorbed for different type of jobs namely

• Civil Engineering: This department is responsible of track, bridges and buildings. The artisan staffs recruited through RRB are generally for maintenance of a track machine etc.
• Mechanical Engineering: This department is responsible for maintenance of Diesel Locomotive, Periodical overhaul of mechanical assets in workshops, Maintenance of Coaches and Wagon in open lines, Production Units etc.
• Electrical Engineering: This department is responsible for maintenance of Electrical Locomotive, Periodical overhaul of Electrical Locomotive and Electrical Multiple Units, Workshops, Train Lighting and Air Conditioning, Electrical General Services, Traction and Distribution etc.
• Signal and Telecommunication: This department is responsible for maintenance of Signal and telecommunication assets spread all over Indian Railways.

1. Each of the department requires artisan staff with ITI in different trades. It means that if you have ITI in Electrical, you are eligible for appearing in a particular vacancy in almost all the departments.
2. Minimum educational qualification is Matriculate and ITI in the specific advertise  trade. One should check the advertisement about the specific ITI trade mentioned thereon.
3. This job is quite suitable for female candidates and there are many satisfied  woman staff working as artisan staff in Indian Railways
4. Transfer from one place to another is hardship to everyone, but it is of real concern for group C staff. Generally, artisan staff is not transferred, but it is not avoidable in some situations. The post of Workshop, Production Units, Electric and Diesel sheds are completely stable without any fear of transfer.  Other posts are also stable but there may be a situation during promotion when the post may not be available at that place and temporarily one may have to move on transfer.
5. The job profile of workshop, sheds and workshops is stable and one is not required to travel for work. The staffs posted on the division for maintenance of asset is generally required to move out of head quarter at least 10 days a week to maintain asset at out-station. He gets a daily allowance if travels more than 8 Km for performing the duty.
6. Promotion from Grade III to Grade I on schedule. The next promotion is in the post of Junior Engineer. 50% of the Junior Engineer vacancies are filled through direct recruitment. Balance 50% are filled through promotion of skilled staff, of which 25% on seniority-cum-stability and balance on selection-cum-suitability. The selection cum suitability examination provides a Gr. III fitter to become a supervisor after 5 years
7. Job aspirants are always wanting to know the  salary at start and it is quite reasonable. That is the reason that there are very large aspirants and there are 1000 applications for each vacancy. The pay scale is Rs. 5200-20200/- with additional grade pay of Rs. 1900/-. One get dearness allowance of 90% of the basic pay, House rent if not allotted with a Railway accommodation and Travelling allowance.
