SCRA: Railways to close down its oldest apprentice program

Indian Railways has reportedly decided to scrap the prestigious Special Class Railway Apprentice Examination (SCRA), which was one of the oldest and highly ranked apprentice programme in India. The Apprentice Examination involved selection of just 30 candidates throughout the country by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to the undergraduate programme in the Mechanical Engineering department at the Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (IRIMEE) at Jamalpur, Bihar. The IRIMEE is one of the six Centralized Training Institutes of Indian Railways functioning for the training of the railway officers. The special classes apprentice exam started in 1927.
