Railways move ahead with its plan to replace conventional toilets, with the bio-vacuum toilets

Indian Railways is reportedly gearing up to replace all conventional toilets in the trains with the “bio-vacuum toilets”. According to railway officials, “these environment-friendly toilets consume less water and also help in preventing corrosion of rail tracks”. Railways’ first vacuum toilets are already on trial in Dibrugarh Rajdhani express since mid-September. Fitted in a First AC coach, with at an estimated cost of about Rs 3 lakh, the vacuum toilet is equipped with the bio-digester system in the train. Indian Railway has also floated global tenders for installing the same at a cost of Rs 25 crore, with several MNCs across the world evincing interest in manufacturing and installing the system.
