What a great occasion it would have been when the first train made its maiden journey at Indian Soil on 16th April 1853 from Mumbai to Thane and never stopping there after growing @ of 900 Km/year. By 1929, a strong network of 66000 route Km. came into existence covering almost all districts of India. After independence, 40% network became part of Pakistan.

Indian Railway is a very large network of 64600 Route Track Km, 7146 Railway Station, 9500 Locomotive, 55400 Coaches, 2, 40,000 Wagons and a large work force of 13.6 lakhs dedicated workforce to construct, maintain and operate throughout the length and breadth of this large network daily. There are three gauges namely Broad Gauge (1676 mm), meter gauge (1000 mm) and narrow gauge (762 mm) of 55956 Km, 6347 Km and 2297 Km respectively. Meter gauze is progressively being converted into Broad gauge under uni-gauge policy but narrow gauge covering mainly hilly terrain will remain as it is.

On this network it operates 681.5 million passenger train Km and 391.5 million freight Km train per annum respectively.
