Deciding early for job opportunity for Engineering graduates in Government

By on June 15, 2014

There is no doubt that a candidate selected for IIT is one among an intelligent lot but it does not corroborate that others are not intelligent. Now one has to chalk out other options for his career. What are those options?

One of the most important other option is to prepare for IES/ICS examination conducted by UPSC and success will prove his point.

Guide to prepare your own action plan

  1. Join best of the  Engineering college which your merit in the competitive examination can get you
  2. Select core branches of  Engineering namely Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics & Communication. Civil Engineering is the best for career in Govt. organisation.
  3. The four years of Engineering course is very important to develop all round  personality not only to succeed ICS/IES but otherwise also to meet the challenges of life in any profession.
  4. Succeeding your engineering course is not a challenge when you possess more than 90% marks in your class XII examination. Attend your classes regularly and attentively. Avoid company of class bunkers.
  5. Fix target year wise

Target Ist Year

  1. Acclimate yourself with the environment  around the institute. Pick up one  hobby and a at least one  sports of your choice and enjoy it.
  2. Make friends selectively but have a smiling face with every one. Develop habit of keeping yourself fresh and smiling.
  3. You will feel home sickness for few months and it is natural and with everyone.
  4. Parents will always be looking for a call from you. Fix a time of the day to talk to your parents once a day and inform them of the happenings of the institute but avoid any such information that may worry them such not liking the food, room partner is lousy etc.
  5. Develop habit of listening to Lok Sabha TV, Rajaya Sabha TV, DD News instead Private news channel which are more of gossip news for TRP rating and not improving your GK. Read competitive examination magazine without fail.
  6. Select one good book to be finished per semester. Avoid fiction novel and select one on philosophy, economics, management, history, biography or auto-biography of great leaders etc.
  7. Try to understand what you are best in and enjoy doing it. Can you select that as a profession?
  8. There is general apathy towards Govt. Job with the feeling that your freedom is limited, lack of job satisfaction, corruption etc. But there are many good points about Govt. Job and read more http://globalrailelectrica.com/job-opportunities-in-rail-transport/group-a-services/.
  9. Once you decide Govt. Job is your career, plan your preparation from 2nd year itself. Remember that if you qualify the examination at minimum age, it opens opportunity to rise to the highest level in the organisation. You will be fresh with academic knowledge for , if you appear in the final year of engineering course.
  10. Preparation for GATE and UPSC goes side by side because it generally takes 18 months before you join a Govt. Job, and therefore, the time should be utilized to complete M.Tech. Even though M.Tech will not benefit you in any way in Govt. career, yet a better usage of the time, availability of academic environment in the institute to continue for preparation if you don’t get satisfactory rank at the first opportunity.
  11. Remember, it is not the technical skills that will matter in a profession but how you conduct yourself in the busy and zig-zag streets of professional success. So remember what you prepare for the competitive examination will benefit you in private job also if you so decide at a later stage.
  12. Once  joined an organisation as a successful candidates, your institutes or percentage marks obtained will be of no help in building your career. You have to begin from scratch and it is the all round personality develop so far will help prove yourself.

Target 2nd  and  3rd Year

  1. Retro-inspect your first year performance towards the target fixed at the beginning. Don’t get disheartened if you missed one.
  2. Keep the syllabus of GATE and UPSC with you and compare it as and when it is taught int he class. Make your notes based on class notes with supplementation from text and guide books.
  3. Read and solve objective and numerical questions
  4. Never miss the target of reading competitive examination and books.
  5. Limit your activity on facebook, whatsapp and other social sites.
  6. Never miss the opportunity of participation in house debates

Target 4th year

  1. Campus selection will begin in the organisation during final year sometime in Jan-Feb. If you miss the opportunity, option of job then will be limited to PSUs and Govt. job. Not very certain about competitive examination of PSUs and UPSC, you are likely to opt for the offer during the placement.
  2. Check from the executives working in Private and PSUs, and they will confirm that the job in Govt. is better.
  3. Salary package of Govt. job is much less as compared to PSUs and also  in some cases of private job. Private may also offer assignment in foreign land. You are likely to be carried away with this. Pure engineering will not help in private for a long time and you will certainly opt for you to  go for MBA very shortly.
  4. If you have already decided for the Govt. job in the first year, then don’t waste time for private campus placement. Large number of candidates goes for two to three years of job in private or PSUs and then coming to Govt. job misses the age advantage at a later date.
  5.  Appear in GATE for a good score so as to take admission in good institutes for M.Tech. This provides you an opportunity of an academic environment for preparation for the examination. Prefer an institute where coaching facility for the competitive examination is available. But in case you have prepared well during the last three years, coaching will only be a waste of time.
  6. Apply for IES and ICS examination . ICS is a tougher competition as compared to IES. It is better to decide based on your own understanding what you can achieve.
  7. Career in ICS cannot be doubted. The topper for the year 2014 result is an engineering from IIT K and management from IIM (Luck.). However, career through IES may be checked at UPSC website along with what is store if you get selected for Railways (generally the first choice for all  branches) at http://globalrailelectrica.com/job-opportunities-in-rail-transport/group-a-services/.

This post is with the objective to guide you choosing a profession with an action plan of sure shot success.
